This is a macro photograph of a small cluster of Tubastrea aurorea coral, also called Golden Cup Coral, that I took while night diving off Palm Beach, Florida. The polyps are out feeding on plankton or anything else that may wonder too close to the sticky tentacles, and it is fascinating to watch as the coral polyps "slurp" their tentacles into the central mouth of each polyp. This coral originates around Venezuela and started showing up here around 1992 when ships coming into the port of Palm Beach would empty their ballast water out to take on cargo. Now, it covers the inshore submerged structures in beautiful arrays of "golden flowers" and seems to prefer the shaded ares of the rocks and crevices. This photograph covers an area approximately 2 x 3 inches. I love the sharp detail of the polyps and the vibrant yellows that brighten up any room and seem to fill it with happiness.
